What is Pediatric Cancer?

Pediatric cancer refers to cancers that occur in children and adolescents, typically under the age of 18. These cancers can affect various parts of the body and can include a wide range of cancer types, similar to those found in adults, as well as certain types that are more common in children.

Some common types of pediatric cancer include:

1. Leukemia: It is the most common type of cancer in children, affecting the blood and bone marrow. The two main types of leukemia in children are acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

2. Brain and central nervous system (CNS) tumors: These tumors can arise in the brain or spinal cord and may be benign or malignant. Medulloblastoma, glioma, and ependymoma are among the types of brain tumors seen in children.

3. Neuroblastoma: Neuroblastoma is a cancer that develops from immature nerve cells, typically occurring in the adrenal glands but can also develop in other areas of the body.

4. Wilms tumor: This is a type of kidney cancer that primarily affects children, usually diagnosed before the age of 5.

5. Lymphoma: Lymphomas are cancers that affect the lymphatic system, which includes the lymph nodes, spleen, thymus, and bone marrow. Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma can occur in children.

6. Rhabdomyosarcoma: Rhabdomyosarcoma is a cancer that develops from muscle tissue and can occur in various parts of the body, including the head and neck, urinary and reproductive organs, and extremities.

7. Retinoblastoma: Retinoblastoma is a cancer of the eye that typically affects young children, usually before the age of 5.
